Documentary on NASA's Juno mission to Jupiter. Involved securing access to embargoed scientific discoveries and devising and commissioning graphics to illustrate cutting edge science.

 

HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS

Series Director [April 17 – July 17]

Returning science series for a US audience. The position was as series director, working across ten episodes. This involved conceiving and directing sequences to illustrate scientific ideas in an entertaining way, and interviewing scientists on a range of subjects. I also planned and executed a 6-week shoot across a number of US states.

STARGAZING LIVE: AUSTRALIA

Popular live astronomy show broadcasting this series from Australia. Produced and directed presenter-led 4-6 minute VTs, communicating complicated ideas to a general audience. The role included self-shooting fast turnaround VTs in Australia and overseeing the live edits on location. Content also transmitted in Australia on ABC.

THE SECRET SCIENCE OF POP

Documentary following an evolutionary biologist's attempts to use science to crack pop success. Involved directing crews and self-shooting actuality on an unfolding science story. Required communicating and visualising complicated data, and overseeing the execution of a specially commissioned experiment involving BBC Research and Development, music researchers and academics.

HORIZON: INSIDE CERN

Director [May 16 – Aug 16]

Second director on unfolding story at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. Involved obs-doc self-shooting in Switzerland as a one-man team and directing crews and contributors on location in the US. Required managing relationships with scientists on the ground to ensure good access.

ALIENS: THE BIG THINK

TX Pilot of new archive-led BBC4 series (additional programmes subsequently commissioned). The film explored the Astronomer Royal's ideas about aliens and how we might find them. Involved using 'eye-direct' filming techniques and creatively using archive to offer a fresh take on the subject.

STARGAZING LIVE

Producer / VT Director [Sep 15 – Jan 16]

Produced and directed science films for popular live astronomy show. Involved planning and executing a two-week self-shooting trip in the US to film half of the series' pre-recorded films. I also ran live edits and produced films on location during the live week (including the BAFTA nominated 'Brit In Space' episode).

THE SKY AT NIGHT: 'PLUTO REVEALED'

One hour, fast turnaround special for New Horizons' flyby of Pluto. Produced and directed all pre-recorded VTs (both crew and self-shot films). Self-shot actuality at NASA's mission control during flyby week.

 

THE TRAVEL SHOW

Producer/Director [Jun 14 – May 15]

Scripted, directed and produced BBC World News travel films. Self-shot expedition/tourism films in China, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Austria and USA, often working with just myself and a presenter. Quick turnaround films involved substantial autonomy.

CAT WATCH 2014

Involved in setting up ambitious cat-tracking experiment, using GPS monitoring, Infrared locators and 'catcams' to follow the lives of domestic cats.. Directed specialist camera shoots and location director for the farm cats strand.
